Posible Amir Khan vs Joan Guzman en Diciembre
By William Mackay:
Former two division world champion Joan Guzman (33-0-1, 20 KO’s) is reporting that he’s in negotiations for a fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) for a fight that will take place in December if the fight can get made.
Guzman, #2 WBA, #4 IBF, told thaboxingvoice.com “I’m scheduled and in negotiations with Amir Khan.”
This kind of makes sense for Khan, because it’s a virtual minefield in the light welterweight division and unless he faces the right opponent, he could very well get knocked out again. Guzman, a former super bantamweight and super featherweight world champion, is starting to show age and he hasn’t had fought a quality opponent since he beat Ali Funeka in March of 2010.
The combination of age, ring rust against quality opponents and him moving up in weight, makes Guzman an ideal opponent for Khan. There’s still a lot of risk involved because Guzman is a good fighter and he’s unbeaten. However, Khan should be able to get past Guzman and he’d gain a lot from beating an unbeaten fighter with a high ranking like him. Of course, this like delaying the inevitable, though. Khan’s problems with facing big punchers will still be there even if he beats Guzman, and unless Golden Boy Promotions are going to weave Khan around all fighters with halfway decent power, he’s eventually going to run into the same problems he’s had in the past when he’s eventually put back in with someone with power.
Golden Boy will have to keep Khan away from a rematch with Danny Garcia, and he’ll also have to keep him away from guys like Lucas Matthysse, Mike Alvarado, Brandon Rios, Ajose Olusegun and Juan Manuel Marquez. In other words, pretty much all the top fighters at light welterweight aside from Lamont Peterson. This is why it might be better if Golden Boy cashes out with Khan soon after matching him up against a bunch light hitters who will pose no threat to him. They can get him a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and then cut their losses after that before the fall, because if Khan is put in with the aforementioned fighters he’s likely to be knocked out by all of them unless there’s a referee that will stay in between him and the fighters all night or break the action each time Khan starts getting pummeled.
