ABRIL VS RÍOS: CUIDADO CON UNA DESASTROSA Y PROTECCIONISTA DECISIÓN
Autor: REYNALDO SÁNCHEZ

Fecha: 4/9/2012

Brandon Rios vs. Richard Abril: Rios Wins Split Decision in Disgraceful Robbery

Let me just start off by comparing this fight to a matador and a raging bull with Richard Abril being the matador and Brandon Rios the bull.
Before the fight even started, Brandon Rios lost his opportunity for the title once again by weighing in over the 135-lb weight limit at 137 lbs. When he was given an hour to lose the two pounds, he came back in weighing 139.
He didn't look healthy at all. He looked like a skeleton at weigh-in, and given the ways he has tried to lose weight in the past, it wasn't healthy. Rios even had a nutritionist in his corner this time but couldn't cut the weight. In the end, he ended up losing some of his purse, a shot at the belt and the $50,000.00 winner's bonus.
The whole fight consisted of Rios charging in and throwing shot after shot to try to pressure Abril. This was the tactic he used in his past fights and usually found success by bullying his opponent into a TKO in the end.
Not this time. Abril didn't play into this and put on a performance that nearly shut out the former undefeated Rios and handing him his first loss in his professional career.
Rios was clearly drained, tired from the start of the fight, and it became more and more visible as the fight carried on. Every round that passed, his punches looked like he was winging them, looked less crisp and with less power.
Abril was calm, smart and just too awkward for Rios. He didn't brawl with Rios and kept him at the end of his jab throughout the entire fight. Every time Rios came charging in, he found Abril's jab right in his face. He controlled the action throughout the entire fight; the tempo was his, and the harder shots belonged to him.
When the final bell rang, it was Abril who had clearly won the fight. I had the fight 10-2, if I was being extremely generous 9-3 for Abril. Rios was dead exhausted, and Abril had seemed to get stronger as the fight progressed.
As soon as the announcer started reading the scores and saying it was split, I felt a robbery coming. Sure enough, two judges ruled in favor of Rios, keeping his undefeated record afloat for just a little bit longer.
This has got to be one of the biggest robberies on the big stage in the last decade and definitely the biggest robbery this year. I've heard people compare Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez trilogy to this, I'm here to say that it wasn't even close. This robbery was worse than Paul Williams "win" over Erislandy Lara.
My apologies to Abril for putting on a strong performance against Rios and being on the bad end of the robbery. It seems for the moment, Rios will stay undefeated for just a little longer.

In the Las Vegas portion of Saturday’s split-site pay-per-view, Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KOs) took a controversial 12-round split decision over a tougher-than-expected Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KOs).
There really should have been no suspense waiting for the scorecard after the 12th round. Abril wasn’t going to get the decision in a fight like this. The hardest foe to beat is a house fighter with big money bouts on the horizon — and the 25-year-old Rios has a world of money fights ahead of him, notably a proposed bout with Juan Manuel Marquez at Cowboys Stadium in July.
The only way for the outsider to take the bout under these circumstances is via knockout. That’s just boxing — a sport where the event promoter foots the bill for the officials, pretty much ensuring that a Cinderella story rarely happens at the expense of the money fighter.
Really, though, this particular contest couldn’t have been better scripted. Rios moves ahead to a big money bout, with the controversy of a gift decision soon forgotten in the mania of a Marquez-Rios showdown. Abril gets cheated, but wins copious amounts of street cred for his performance and will likely stick around for a crack at the still-vacant WBA lightweight title.
Abril got the biggest payday of his career, a sweet bonus for Rios failing to make weight, and big fight exposure. But if he thought that he’d spoil his way to a win over a fighter with millions on the table, he had to be delusional.
The lanky Cuban boxed competently and did a good job of nullifying a hard-charging Rios with smart movement and an awkward, all arms defense up close.
Rios did his part and came forward all night, but could never get a sustained offensive push going. He didn’t look drained from his well-publicized struggle to make the lightweight limit the day before, he just looked confused and thrown off rhythm.
Abril, to his credit, kept his poise and maintained his game plan throughout the full twelve rounds and, in a perfect world, should’ve won the decision.
However, the boxing world isn’t perfect and he had to settle for a split decision loss which saw Adalaide Byrd score the fight 117-111 in his favor with Jerry Roth scoring a completely different bout, 116-112 for Rios. The third judge, Glenn Trowbridge, had Rios winning by a score of 115-113. For the record, The Boxing Tribune saw the fight 115-113 in favor of Abril.
In the co-headliner from the New Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs) scored a comprehensive, but unspectacular unanimous decision win over the Ukraine’s Sergey Fedchenko (30-2, 13 KOs) by scores of 119-109, 118-110, and 118-110.
What does a counter-puncher do against a tricky, awkward opponent with low punch output? In this case, the counter-puncher does enough to win at least 10 of the 12 rounds, scoring what he can and working at his own pace.
After taking the first two rounds off to figure out his opponent, Marquez settled into a groove and did enough to solidly win the next 10 rounds. The Mexico City native, fighting for the first time in his hometown since 1994, made an effort to put away a tiring Fedchenko in the 12th and final round, but was unable to find the sweet spot against an opponent fighting to survive.
At the end of 12, The Boxing Tribune agreed with two of the judges, scoring the contest 118-110 in favor of Marquez.
Marquez walked away with the interim WBO junior welterweight title, which cost him about $15,000 in sanctioning fees.
Back in Vegas, Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KOs) scored a unanimous 10-round decision over Mauricio Herrera (18-2, 7 KOs) by scores of 99-91, 97-93, and 96-94 in a meaningful junior welterweight bout.
From the opening bell, Denver’s Alvarado jumped on Herrera, forcing an inside fight against the lighter-hitting boxer. Herrera battled back, but lacked the firepower to hurt or even earn the respect of his opponent.
As early as the second half of the first round, Herrera began showing signs of facial damage from Alvarado’s heavy shots and by the eighth round, his left eye was almost completely closed. Alvarado was also alightly banged up, sporting a small cut on the outside corner of his right eye, sustained in the middle rounds.
Ultimately, though, Herrera was fighting on the retreat all night and Alvarado was right in his comfort zone, taking a solid decision over an opponent one notch below world-class.
In the opening bout of the pay-per-view telecast, fought at the junior welterweight limit, Filipino prospect Mercito Gesta (25-0-1, 13 KOs) scored a TKO 8 victory over Colombian journeyman Oscar Cuero (15-8, 12 KOs). Cuero was down in both the seventh and eighth rounds.
In off-TV results from Mexico City, Saul Roman (35-9, 29 KOs) won a majority decision over Richard Gutierrez (26-9-1, 16 KOs) in a battle of journeyman junior middleweights. Gutierrez has now lost his last five fights in a row.
